Pedego is one of the largest eBike brands in the United States, with a loyal customer base and an expansive network of independent dealers nationwide. When Pedego set out to modernize its digital experience, migrating from WordPress to Shopify Plus, the challenge was not only about upgrading the ecommerce platform, it was about reimagining how a multi-location business could deliver performance, flexibility, and usability across both consumer and dealer experiences.
Designing a Mobile-First Experience for Technical Shoppers
A key objective of the new site was creating a mobile-first experience that could educate buyers on the technical details that define each bike. From tire width and battery range to riding style and frame type, Pedego’s product catalog is highly configurable and spec-heavy. The new Shopify Plus experience features a clean, intuitive UI that makes complex information digestible, especially on mobile, so shoppers can explore, compare, and confidently choose the right eBike.
Easily accessible specs, size guides, and bike geometry information.
Visually learn about the different features of the bike.
Solving the Dealer Management Challenge
Pedego’s biggest technical hurdle wasn’t just consumer-facing, it was internal. Each of Pedego’s nearly 200 independent dealers had previously been given their own store location web page, powered by Yext CMS. Dealers were able to manage their own local content and select featured products. Maintaining this functionality without relying on Yext’s real-time API, while still providing native Shopify performance, posed a major architectural challenge.
Building a Custom YEXT Integration via Shopify Metaobjects
To solve this, our team modeled dealer data directly in Shopify using Related Metaobjects. These Metaobjects captured all relevant dealer information (store hours, location, staff photos, and promotional content) using Shopify-native fields and relationships. This meant dealer pages could be rendered using Shopify’s Liquid templating engine, with no need for client-side API calls to Yext.
Behind the scenes, we built a lightweight middleware service to sync content between Yext and Shopify.
Content from Yext → Shopify: Dealers edit within the Yext interface, and content syncs into Shopify
Product data from Shopify → Yext: Dealers can promote live Shopify products from their Yext environment
Enabling Buy Online, Pickup In Store (BOPIS) with Locally
For Pedego, the most popular purchase method isn’t direct-to-door, it’s Buy Online, Pickup In Store. Customers typically want to reserve a bike online and pick it up at their nearest local dealer, where they can receive expert setup and service.
To support this, we integrated the Locally app, which enables real-time inventory visibility across Pedego’s nationwide dealer network. As customers browse bikes on Pedego.com, they can see which models are available for pickup at nearby dealer locations. During checkout, Locally provides a seamless interface for selecting a preferred store and reserving the bike, while also routing the order directly to that dealer for fulfillment.
Since it's important for a lot of their buyers to shop in person, “Try Before You Buy” allows users to enter their zip code and find nearby stores where they can test bikes in person.
This integration allows Pedego to deliver a highly localized shopping experience within a centralized Shopify Plus architecture. Dealers benefit from increased foot traffic and service opportunities, while customers get the convenience of online shopping with the confidence and support of in-store pickup.
Each dealer can customize their page with contact info, featured bikes, events, and promos.
Seamless Migration, Seamless SEO
To preserve traffic and SEO equity from the old WordPress/Yext setup, we preserved the same URL handles for each dealer page. With almost 200 dealer-specific pages to migrate, we implemented a wildcard redirect strategy that ensured a seamless transition for users and search engines alike.
Record-Breaking Results: Native Performance with Enterprise Flexibility
Within just one month post launch, Pedego saw more sales than in the entire previous year.
The new Pedego.com combines the scalability and performance of Shopify Plus with a custom enterprise solution that keeps content editing decentralized and user-friendly. Dealers retain control over their store pages without the need for Shopify accounts, while customers enjoy lightning-fast access to detailed product and location info, all rendered natively within Shopify.
And with local pickup via Locally fully integrated, Pedego’s new Shopify experience mirrors how its customers already love to buy locally, conveniently, and with confidence.
